AMC Repair Committee
What You and Your Congregation Can Do
Engaging in the Work of Repair is a faithful way to respond to harms created by the Doctrine of Discovery and its dispossession of Indigenous peoples. Over the past centuries, this dispossession has deprived Native groups of their lands and human rights while benefiting others. Addressing these harms means working as allies with Indigenous-led groups, listening to their voices, and using our resources to support Repair and Restoration. Below are suggestions for congregations to begin this work.
- Read and study the educational materials on the www.dofdmenno.org website.
- Consider making a one-time or line item donation to the Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Coalition or an Indigenous group that works for systemic change. (See these guidelines from Shalom Mennonite Fellowship, Tucson, AZ)
- Organize a committee or team to carry the work beyond awareness to advocacy.
- Become an advocate. Learn about legal and environmental issues involving Indigenous groups in your area or elsewhere. Write and visit your local and state representatives to advocate for Indigenous-led changes. Show up at Indigenous protests.
- Write a Land Acknowledgement statement for your congregation.
- Connect the Work of Repair with Creation Care.
- Commit to being contagious in spreading awareness of the Doctrine of Discovery and the Work of Repair.
